Is There A Problem With Intermittent Fasting And Fertility

Intermittent Fasting And Fertility

Before we answer the question about intermittent fasting and fertility, we have to learn what intermittent fasting is.

Intermittent fasting, also known as interval fasting, is really a very popular diet at the moment.

It is very interesting for its application: it plans to alternate meals, with fasting periods.

Do not be afraid, in fasting periods in which you will not have to touch food and therefore you will not consume meals, you will have the opportunity to drink non-calorie drinks. For example, tea, coffee or water. The important thing is that they are not sweetened.

The most popular pattern is 14-16 hours of fasting and instead 8-10 hours in which you eat, and therefore meals can be consumed regularly.

In most of these intermittent fasting diets it is not allowed to consume too many calories and despite fasting it is still good, not to overdo it with fats.

It really looks like the long life’s elixir, and it can be a healthy solution for many people.

There are many researches that speak of an insertion in one’s own fasting diet. This particularity of the diet seems to be the one that will slow down the aging process.

What are the advantages of intermittent fasting?

  • A constant decrease in fat and therefore in body weight
  • Decreased blood glucose and insulin levels
  • Progressive increase in calorie expenditure
  • Increased glucagon levels, increased GH levels
  • A progressive decrease in systemic inflammation
  • Increased adrenaline levels
  • The advantage of healthy eating is the ability to be more productive during your days.

Certainly, an advantage not to be underestimated, is the fact that you eat very large meals and consume more fruits and vegetables which, as we know, have a positive effect on our body.

Obviously fast food is not recommended. It is replaced by whole foods and foods rich in proteins which thus keep the body full.

Why is this diet not for everyone?

If on the one hand there can be many benefits, on the other, the abstinence from food prolonged for many hours will be a stressful for the body that will not be able to adapt.

They are therefore interventions that should always be personalized. That possibly represent “improvements” and not initial steps in improving the quality of the food.

Healthy subjects can possibly try to follow the protocol for a limited period by monitoring the reactions. People with health problems or disorders (diabetes, taking medicines, underweight, pressure problems, etc..) should consult a doctor before undertaking this practice, since the metabolic profile can even get worse.

Consider all the difficulties and risks, better then follow a balanced diet for 7 days compared to stressing the mind and body with hours and hours of fasting. Even in the first case the weight is reduced and the blood parameters improve, but everyday life is not penalized.

Like all drastic diets, these protocols are taken by storm by those people who, in order not to commit themselves every day to changing their lifestyle, prefer to fast or almost for two days to get results.

In the long run, this can turn into frustration, the exceptions become more frequent and everything returns as before. Especially if you proceed with the unfortunately evergreen DIY.

Or worse, it could lead to behavioural problems and generate effects of loss of control over nutrition.

While if you could change your habits little by little, day after day, having to follow strict feeding patterns would no longer be necessary. The basic steps remain to eat better and regularly, exercise every day and manage stress.

Is intermittent fasting advisable for women trying to get pregnant?

The diet during pregnancy is a determining factor in ensuring the good health of the pregnant woman and the baby.

The total calories to be assigned in the diet for pregnancy are a matter of primary importance. In fact, there are harmful conditions of use, correlated to an incorrect caloric intake. That can compromise the development of the unborn child and the psycho-physical integrity of the mother. Pregnancy involves significant changes in the female body. Not all changes are visible, but even those that we cannot observe can have a serious influence on the progress of the pregnancy itself and on the state of well-being of a pregnant woman. This is what happens in particular following the action of hormones.

During pregnancy, the correct balance between the various hormones involved, produced initially by the ovaries and, subsequently, by the placenta, is fundamental. In fact, they maintain the right conditions so that everything ends at best for both the mother and the baby. Studies indicate a whole range of positive applications for the various intermittent fasting modes. However, it is important to stress that not everyone can practice this type of intervention.

For this, Intermittent fasting is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in other condition where is essential the right balance of hormones.

When trying to get pregnant, it is good to eat a varied diet, with all the nutrients expected.
